You Know There's Nothing More Than This

It seems, since we got together, that there has been an endless stream of death for her to contend with. Two relatives, a treasured pet, and now a friend. It is all far, far too much within a few months.

I wonder, sometimes, how death feels for her in the godless world she inhabits. She doesn't even get to believe in a heaven filled with souls taken roughly or prematurely from this earth.

But then, I doubt that it feels very different to the world I inhabit, where God often feels like a waning moon. Or where, at best, I am constantly reminded of a line from a Wolf Parade song:

I always say it's in God's hands, but God doesn't always have the best goddamn plans, does he?

Andrew,

I wanted to say something... But I don't know what. This really moved me. I'm glad she has someone like you around.

Oh Andrew, being godless has nothing to do with anything. Death is death, loss is loss, whether you believe or not (and besides, we godless do believe - we believe there is no god.) Sometimes, just having a warm, loving body close by at a time of loss is enough. There really is nothing more than this.

Are you sure you want to leave things in "god's" hands? That dude needs a serious manicure, and I've heard health department related things regarding him.

Seriously, I don't do the god stuff. I was raised Baptist (sans snakes) but a good dose of LSD cured it when I was 19. I never believed, but after that, I quit feeling bad about NOT believing.

I just find sanity works better for me heheheh. ;)

Sorry for the slow reply, I was away for a few days.

Meadow - Thanks. It was a very sad moment when I wrote that. It's always impossible to know exactly what to do when someone is grieving, except just be there.

Tessa - I'm not quite sure if you've taken my post the wrong way or not. i wasn't criticising atheists in any way, just observing that those who believe in an afterlife can gain a modicum of comfort from it, whether it's rational or not.

SLIL - Wow, I've never heard of acid as a cure for guilt before. Interesting.

Lovely image.

Not at all, Andrew, criticism neither seen nor taken. I was moved by your post and was trying to say that, so long as you have each other, it really doesn't matter who believes what. Next time I'll practice it before hitting 'publish,' promise ...
